Maintain or Destroy?

cherry 2The area in which I live has many beautiful, mature Cherry trees.  They are simply stunning when in bloom and make the street and Sheffield a greener, cleaner and more pleasant place to live.  Sheffield is a very green city and I (and most residents) would like it to stay that way.

Sheffield City cherry choppedCouncil wishes to remove the mature Cherry trees on our road and surrounding roads.  The Council explain that the trees are damaging the pavement and highways.  Whilst the pavement is bulging and cracked in places, is this really a big issue?  Perhaps it is more of an issue for those with limited mobility – although, I recently broke my leg and still managed to pass the trees without any problems.

I believe the trees should be maintained and managed, rather than destroyed.  It’s very sad to see to see Sheffield’s beautiful trees chopped in this way.  Sheffield is trying to promote clean air awareness and more environmental means of transport – does destroying trees really set the right example?  Surely, we and Sheffield City Council can manage our trees in a more sustainable manner…?
