Bridge Garden Design Sheffield

I’m very excited about a new garden project based in Sheffield. The Clients are planning a ground floor extension and require a re-designed garden with a ‘wow’ factor to complement their new home.  This project is particularly challenging since the garden topography is very complex.  The main lawn area is considerably higher than the ground floor level of the house and the clients were concerned that the lower patio would feel too enclosed by a retaining wall up to the lawn level – they didn’t want to look out of the ground floor window and see an imposing wall.  The 1st floor balcony was originally designed with garden access via a small staircase down to the patio.  Whilst this was practical and allowed access to the garden, it lacked any real theatre.

After meeting the clients and considering the brief I contemplated how to turn the constraints of the garden topography into positives attributes of the garden.  I believe a successful garden design will tackle the perceived challenges (the garden slopes, in this case) and use them to create a more interesting and exciting design.  It soon occurred to me that the height of the lawn could be used to our advantage and would allow a bridge to be incorporated.  The bridge would be a fantastic feature, facilitating an interesting and ‘grand’ entrance to the garden.  The bridge will be further enhanced by the addition of two waterfall blades cascading into a large feature pond.

Water Feature Design

The main lawn area is retained by a series of curving terraces rising gradually from the patio level.  The terraces will be softened by planting and will incorporate various decked seating areas.  The clients were worried that the lower patio could feel enclosed and oppressive, however, the gently curving terraces, beautiful planting and striking water feature will transform the patio into a stunning courtyard, and a great place to relax.

The whole design will be further enhanced by the addition of lighting.  LED spotlights will highlight the planting and deck mounted lights will up-light the glass balustrade panels.  The waterfall blades will incorporate LED lighting strips – these will light the blades of water and cause them to glow at night.

I can’t wait to see this garden come together, and I will post further photos as the build progresses.
